Subs not used: James Anderson. New Warrington Town boss Shaun Reid had a tough start to his Wire's career after losing out 7-1 to Durham City in the Evo-Stik NPL First Division North on Saturday. Reid gave debut's to a host of new signings after taking over from former boss Joey Dunn. In the wake of a number of players leaving the club including Allan Collins, Gavin Salmon, Matt Cross, Mike Dufy and River Humphreys, Reid brought in Kevin Townson, Michael Jackson, Gerard Kinsella, Tom Williams and Michael Reid. Despite the unfamiliar look, it was Warrington that started the brightest on Durham's unfamiliar plastic pitch, and could have taken the lead in the first thirty seconds of the match, new signing Kevin Townson's knock down finding strike partner Chris Thompson, who saw his shot go narrowly wide of the target. Townson was causing the home defence all sorts of problems earlier on, seeing both efforts of a double strike blocked by the home rearguard. The first chance for the home side fell to winger Elliott Cutts seeing his curling free kick tipped over the bar by Town keeper Paul Pritchard. Once again, Town went close soon after, Townson seeing his cross falling to the unmarked Dale Wright, who shot over the crossbar when well placed. In a game that was developing into an end to end game, City striker Dave Dowson shot over when well placed. Just before the half hour mark, the home side capitalised on a slip by Town captain for the day, Dave Ness, which allowed Dowson to run clear and beat Pritchard. Just three minutes after the restart, Town thought they had found an equaliser, Nick Jackson's jinking run and shot was palmed away by City keeper Lewis Graham into the path of Thompson, who slotted home from close range, only to see the assistant referee had his flag raised for offside, despite the player originally being clearly onside. Less than a minute later, the visitors were reduced to 10 men, when debutant centre half Michael Jackson was sent off, apparently for something said to referee Mr Hulme. Despite going down to ten men, Town were still in the game, with Townson shooting straight at keeper Graham from the edge of the area, before City striker Stephen Thompson saw his shot saved by Pritchard, as the half wore on, both sides created opportunities, the closest either side came was when Thompson saw his curling effort rebound away to safety off the upright, with Graham well beaten. Durham extended their lead on the stroke of half time, Thompson got in front of Ness to slot home a cross into the far corner. Less than thirty seconds later, Duham made it three, when midfielder Jonathan Davis got on the end of a quick break, to slot home beyond Pritchard. Unbelievably, City made it three goals in the 45th minute when midfielder Andrew Stephenson was put through a static Town rearguard to slot home. The first chance of the second half fell to Town substitute Rob Hardwick, who shot too close to Graham. Just three minutes into the half, City further extended their lead, a clever back heel releasing Thompson, who curled home a fine shot from the edge of the box. After a raft of substitutions by both sides, it was City substitute Amar Purewal who shot across the face of the Town goal when well placed. Just before the hour, Hardwick went close once againe, seeing his towering header go narrowly the wrong side of the upright. Two minutes later, Town went close to adding some respectability to the game, Townson seeing his curling free kick smack away off the upright once again. Two minutes later and Town did get a goal back, Townson heading home unmarked at the far post after Graham had missed his clearance. Less than a minute later, City regained their five goal lead, Dowson, seeing his shot saved by Pritchard, however, the rebound was collected by Dowson, who saw his pass finished by the on rushing Conor Winter. With just under a quarter of the game to go, Town were denied what looked a certain penalty, Thompson shoved over in the box, with Mr Hulme waving away the protests of the town players and supporters gathered behind the goal. For the third time in the game, Warrington hit the woodwork soon after, Hardwick seeing his looping header fall onto the crossbar with Graham furiously backpedalling. That was as close as Town got to scoring again, with Pritchard pulling off a fine save before the home side made it seven, Thompson completing his hat trick from twelve yards. Right on the stroke of full time, City went close to adding an eigth goal, a jinking run and shot from City winger Cutts saw his shoot narrowly wide of the upright. | ||||||
