Unused subs: Milnes, Kromah. WARRINGTON Town returned to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Corby Town. They managed to do what they failed to do against Nantwich on Tuesday, and that was hold on to win having led 2-0. The nerves were in evidence when Corby pulled one back with eight minutes to play, just as Nantwich had done in the previous game before they completed a remarkable late turnaround to win 3-2. This time the Yellows held out, as goals from strikers Ciaran Kilheeney and new signing Tom Peers proved enough. Warrington based Peers, who arrived at the club this week from Telford, made his debut up front in place of Steven Gillespie. The Yellows were dealt with a blow prior to kick-off, with Daniel Ventre ruled to not be fit enough to start, which meant a reshuffle in midfield and Simon Lenighan wearing the number four shirt. It was an uneventful first half, Warrington unable to make anything of three consecutive corners early in the first half. Corby’s best chance fell to Connor Kennedy, but it was Warrington who would take the lead. Kilheeney beat the defender to the ball and then finished nicely past the ‘keeper to give the home side a 1-0 advantage at the break. Peers might have had a goal within five minutes of the restart, receiving Andy Nicholas’ low cross and just not being able to turn and get a shot away. A speculative 30-yard effort from Lenighan marked the only real chance of note as Warrington started the second half on the front foot. That was until 54 minutes, when the second goal arrived through Peers, who left the ‘keeper completely wrong footed and poked a shot slowly past him. It looked like being a routine win for Warrington, with Corby, winless away from home this season, offering little in attack. The first sign of any nerves came on 75 minutes when Karl Wills fought to claim a free-kick on the floor. And then the tension went up a notch, as Corby bagged through substitute Andre Johnson on 82 minutes. Unlike Tuesday though, Warrington were able to close the game out and secure a welcome three points. | ||||||
