WARRINGTON Town suffered their first league defeat of the season going down 3-0 at GarforthTown after playing nearly half the game with 10 men after keeper Paul Pritchard saw red. The home side were the better of the two sides, but it was still a surprise when they took the lead in the 17th minute, striker Paul Walker’s lofted effort deceiving everyone and, despite the efforts of Town’s goalkeeper, who got a hand on the ball, managed to find the back of the net. Warrington looked to get back into the game, and went close when Gareth Farrelly’s teasing cross was missed by everyone in a crowded penalty area with the ball safely going out of play. The home side almost scored a second goal just after the half hour, when striker Chris Howarth, saw his shot deflected onto the crossbar, and only a last gasp challenge by Tom Hardwick prevented Walker from scoring a second from the rebound. Warrington were showing sporadic moments of danger to the home defence, and it was one of these which saw striker Gavin Salmon power onto a through ball, and hold off a defender to get a shot away on goal, which was saved well by Garforth keeper Lee Kelsey. Town started to get into the game and it took a smart save from Kelsey, to deny Bathurst a first goal for the club, by saving with his feet. At the start of the second half the home side had the better of the early chances, but it was Town midfielder Rob Hardwick who had the first effort, seeing his curling shot go wide. The home side were still dangerous, and forced Pritchard to tip a cross cum shot over the bar soon after. The game changed ten minutes into the second half, when Pritchard brought down winger Chris Fisher in the penalty area, forcing the referee to produce a red card, and with no keeper on the bench, Tom Rutter was forced to take the gloves. Howarth coolly stepped up to dispatch the penalty past the stand in custodian. With Town’s back to the wall, the home side went looking for more goals, but saw at least three efforts go straight at Rutter. Town struggled to get back into the game, with Howarth shooting across the face when well placed. The home side found a third goal, when the unmarked Walker’s glancing header went in off the post. The last chance of the game fell to Salmon, who shot wide from the edge of the box. Now Warrington mus re-group for thier biggest challenge of the season when Northern Conference Stalybridge Celtic visit Cantilever Park in the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
