WARRINGTON Town kick started their season after picking up their first points with a narrow 1-0 victory over Wakefield, thanks to a penalty from last seasons top scorer Chris Gahgan.
Following a scrappy start with both sides testing each other out, Rob Dutton had the first effort, easily saved by visiting keeper Jan Zolna.
Town were indebted to debutant Lee Smith, returning to the club from Prescot Cables, who cleared an effort from midfielder Mark Wilson off the line. Phil Hadland saw his looping header easily dealt with by Zolna. Just before half time another goalmouth scamble saw Darren Kinsey clearing off the line and Wakefield hitting the bar and when the ball was cleared Rob Dutton raced away on goal before being fouled in the box. Chris Gahgan (pictured right) blasted home the resulting penalty.
The second half once again scrappy with the game taking place mainly in the middle third of the field. Dutton was first to go close, seeing his shot smack against the upright, the rebound shot by Hadland, being saved by Zolna. Wakefield tried to step up their game but were thwarted by ‘keeper Richie Mottram, with a flying save at his near post. The game had opened up and Gahgan was next to go close, forcing Zolna to fingertip his shot around the post. Twice in injury time, Town were indebted to man-of-the-match Mottram who firstly produced a flying save to deny Wilson then a block with his legs to deny striker Adam Jones with virtually the last kick of the game.
