WARRINGTON Town recorded their biggest win of the season, thanks to a fantastic second half performance, which saw them score four goals without reply, including three goals in seven minutes, as they beat basement club Rossendale 5-1 at Cantilever Park last night.
Town started well with winger Jimmy McCarthy’s early header testing keeper Tom Brocklehurst. The early pressure told in the 11th minute when when McCarthy’s shot deflected off a defender and into the goal. Town continued to pour forward looking for more goals, only for striker Tony Evans to see his shot go narrowly over the bar. Rossendale then had their best spell of the game and equalised on the 40th minute, striker Andre Williams beating a statuesque Town backline to round keeper Richie Mottram and score. Town were then indebted to Mottram for keeping the score level just before half time, as he produced a fantastic save to deny striker Jack Brierley.
Warrington started the second half well and soon took control of the game, with both Evans and McCarthy being denied by last gasp challenges as shooting opportunities arose. Rossendale had their only real chance of the second half soon after, but a fantastic sliding block by Tom Hardwick, denied the chance.
Town were soon ahead, as on 57 minutes, Chris Gahgan received the ball in space, cut inside the last defender and shot powerfully into the roof of the net. Gahgan was then involved in Town’s third goal, crossing for a leaping Gavin Salmon to find the net for his second goal in two games. Town were now in total control of the game, and soon McCarthy made it four, latching onto a cross field pass, he beat the last defender and finished easily.
The scoring was completed in the 74th minutes when striker Tony Evans got the goal he deserved, latching onto an excellent through ball to finish low into the bottom corner. Town continued to press but could not find a sixth goal, despite the efforts of Mike Tomlinson, who saw his two headers go over the bar.
Warrington will continue to press for a play-off spot when they entertain Ossett Albion at Cantilever Park on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
