WARRINGTON Town’s promotion hopes suffered a major set back as they went down 2-1 at follow play-off contenders Skelmersdale United. Town, who missed some gilt edged changes finished the game with 10 men following the controversial dismissal of central defender Levi Kennedy, who saw red in the 75th minute for a second yellow. By that stage the home team were already two up as Chris Almond (69) and Paul Woolcott (71) scored twice in quick succession. It could have been worse for Town as the referee awarded Skelmersdale a penalty following Kennedy’s challenge, which appeared to be a clean tackle, connecting with the ball, as Richie Mottram saved the penalty. Warrington set up a grandstand finish as substitute Richard Chetcuti showed great skill to net in the 86th minute but it was too little too late as Town slipped back in 7th in the table. It could have all beeen so different if leading scorer Chris Gaghan had taken a great chance just before half time when he danced through the United defence only to lose control of the ball with the goal at his mercy. Jimmy McCarthy also saw a great chance tipped over the bar by the keeper. Town have a chance to get back in the play-off race when they visit Mossley at Ashton United’s ground on Tuesday evening, kick off 7.45pm followed by a home game against Prescott Cables next Saturday, 3pm. | ||||||
