WARRINGTON Town paid a high price for their 2-1 victory at Wakefield as influential skipper Mike Tomlinson was stretchered off five minutes from time with another knee injury. Early indications are that it is not the same injury which left the central defender on the sidelines for nearly two months but he could be out for several weeks with damaged knee ligaments. In a scrappy game Warrington took the lead after just three minutes when a speculative long range effort from stand in centre forward Richard Chetcuti bobbled under the outstretched keeper who should have saved. But Town, playing with three at the back with McCarthy and Gahgan filling in as wing backs, failed to make the most of their bright start, with much of the game bogged down in midfield, with neither side creating many clear cut chances. Shortly after the break Town went two up when on loan signing Sam Finlay (pictured above) beat the off-side trap to fire home. Warrington again sat back and allowed Wakefield back into the game and the home side were eventually rewarded when 6ft 5 Tom Denton was allowed a free header to score. As Wakefield pushed for an equaliser Jimmy McCarthy wasted a good opportunity, pulling the ball behind Gahgan who had the goal at his mercy. In a frantic goal mouth scramble the home side thought they had equalised but keeper Ben Connett some how kept the ball out as Town held on for three much needed points, holding on to 9th spot in the league table. | ||||||
