TWO goals from youngster Sam Finlay, one a contender for goal of the season, helped Warrington Town secure a 3-1 victory over Harrogate Railway at Cantilever Park last night.
Town were looking to avenge a recent 2-1 defeat by the same opponents in Yorkshire and started the better but it was the visitors who had the first chance, striker Steve Palfrey seeing his run blocked by Town goalkeeper Ben Connett.
Despite Town controlling the game, they struggled to create many chances, midfielder Connor Millington seeing his shot go wide, and Levi Kennedy seeing his weak shot go straight at James Mann in the Harrogate goal.
The visitors had their best chance of the half on 34 minutes, striker Ben Jones shooting across the face of goal from a corner. The game sparked into life in the 41st minute, when Town took the lead, Sam Finley capitalising on good work by Gavin Salmon and hesitancy in the visitors defence to find the back of the net.
Town went close shortly afterwards when top scorer Chris Gahgan narrowly failed to connect with full back Mike Duffy’s teasing right wing cross.
The second half also saw Town emerge the better side, and continued to create chances, striker Gavin Salmon shooting weakly at Mann. It wasn’t long before Town doubled the lead, when Finley, currently on loan from Southport, took control of the ball on the edge of the box before finding the bottom corner of the goal past a despairing Mann dive.
The introduction of two substitutes brought the visitors back into the game as they had their best spell of the game, twice forcing Connett to save well, the second seeing a goalmouth scramble which Town eventually cleared.
It was no surprise when the visitors pulled a goal back, midfielder Paul Stansfield latching onto a through ball to dispatch the ball beyond Connett and into the net.
Within five minutes, Town regained the two goal lead, when Gahgan scored at the third attempt after seemingly losing the ball and seeing his shot blocked.
Town went close to adding a fourth goal late on when Salmon saw his angled drive go narrowly wide of the post.
