WARRINGTON Town travelled to Wakefield in confident mood after an encouraging point against high flying FC Halifax at the weekend but lost out 1-0 with a “sucker punch” five minutes from time.
The game started slowly, both sides testing the other out in the early stages and it wasn’t until the 11th mnute that there was an effort on goal, when Town goalkeeper Richie Mottram made a good low save to deny Wakefield striker James Walshaw, in what turned into a scrappy game.
Town went closest to scoring when Wakefield’s centre back Dudgeon forced his own keeper to tip his looping back header onto the crossbar and away to safety.
Town’s recalled midfielder Franny Smith was next to go close when his blistering drive went narrowly over. Mottram was forced into a low save just befor half time.
The second half began in the same manner, with the game being played mostly in midfield, Smith going close for Town, and Wakefield midfielder Wayne Shooter shooting wide of the target.
Town went closest to scoring when left back Tom Hardwick got on the end of a good move to shoot narrowly across the face of Andy Woods’ goal.
The game looked to be heading for a 0-0 draw when Town were hit with the sucker punch, substitute Delroy Ferguson on hand to tap home a decisive attack to deny Town a deserved point
