WARRINGTON Town travelled to relegation threatened Rossendale looking to extend a run of four consecutive wins, but were undone 3-2 by a poor performance and some strange refereeing decisions. Town started brightly, putting their hosts under immediate pressure, and their pressure paid off in the 10th minute when top scorer Chris Gahgan drove home from the edge of the box to put Town 1-0 up. Warrington immediately pushed forward looking for a second goal, and five minutes later, Tom Lamb had the ball in the net, but saw referee Mr Clayton rule the goal out, for a high foot in the process of the overhead kick, despite having no defender within a yard of him. The home side were visibly lifted by this and began to get into the game, forcing Ritchie Mottram into a good save. Town were denied another goal shortly afterwards when Mr Clayton ruled that Mike Grogan had pushed his defender before placing a bullet header past Ben Proctor in the Rossendale goal. Rossendale forced Mottram into tipping a dipping shot over the bar soon after. The home side came out far more positive after the break and within two minutes were level, player manager Phil Eastwood picking up an errant pass before beating Mottram from 30 yards with a bullet shot. Within seven minutes the home side were ahead, a free kick by midfielder John Turner rebounding off the bar, straight to Eastwood, who blasted the ball beyond Mottram. On the hour, Turner blasted home a free kick to give the home side an undeserved two goal lead. Three minutes later defender Paul Bowes received a second yellow card for a challenge on the edge of the box. Town actually started to get into the game after this and went close through Jimmy McCarthy. In the 70th minute, Town were awarded only their second penalty away from home in two years, when Lamb was fouled in the box and Gahgan blasted home beyond Proctor. Town pushed forward in vain but could not find an equalising goal. Warrington now have to dust themselves down to face the lengthy journey to promotion chasing Newcastle Blue Star on Saturday and then return to Cantilever Park next Monday evening to entertain FA Cup giant killers Curzon Ashton. | ||||||
