Both sides started well, the first opportunity fell to Town skipper, Karl Rendell, who slipped when shooting, causing a weak shot straight at the home keeper. The home sides first opportunity was cleared off the line by Matty Elder. Stocksbridge controversially took the lead in the 13th minute, when midfielder Gary Oldham’s header was adjudged by the assistant referee to have crossed the line, despite a save by Shane McWeeney, the decision agrieved the Town players and supporters, as it clearly appeared not to have done so. This incident also saw Mike Ellison having to leave the field injured, to be replaced by Phil Mitchell. Elder was again on hand to block an effort shortly afterwards. The home side were now on top, but due to a combination of good defending, some good saves and wasteful finishing, saw no more goals before half time. Town started the second half brighter and within two minutes midfielder Anthony Daniels shot across the face of the goal, shortly afterwards, Rendell took too long to shoot when through on goal and his shot was blocked. The home side had their chances however, which saw Oldham shoot across the face of the goal. Daniels went close shortly after, shooting weakly after a long run, and once again, Rendell shot narrowly wide following a goalmouth scramble. The flashpoint of the second half, happened when Daniels was sent off for a two footed challenge on 78 minutes. This lead to Town chasing the game and shortly afterwards, a Francis Smith free kick came to nought. The last chance of the game fell to substitute Chris Moores, whose header went narrowly across the face of the goal. | ||||||
