Town handed debuts to winger Scott Williams and striker Thomas Lamb, and within three minutes debutant Williams nodded them in front after meeting a Francis Smith free kick at the far post. A dream start was completed for boss Paul Moores when Lamb was able to double the away side’s advantage, meeting Williams’ corner to find the net. Carlton began to get a foot-hold in the game soon after, with Steve Everett coming to Warrington’s rescue by block a goal bound drive. Lamb should have grabbed his second of the afternoon when he drove a shot narrowly wide from a good position. On 28 minutes, the home side got the goal they were looking for when striker Phil Bignall saw his effort deflect off Matty Elder past Shane McWeeney in the Warrington goal. Within a minute, the home side were level when Elder put through his own goal despite the efforts of McWeeney. The half ended with Town behind as Bignall was able to convert from the spot after a foul by Danny Toone. The Wire started the second half a lot better and were nearly gifted the equaliser when Carlton captain Michael Martin drove narrowly wide of his own goal when attempting to clear. McWeeney kept Warrington in with a chance after saving well from Aidan Brady, before Elder nearly atoned for his early mistakes, but his effort was blocked on the line. Town did draw level on 56 minutes however when Spearitt headed his first goal for the club. It wasn’t long before Town’s own comeback was complete as substitute Connor Taylor scored his third goal in as many games with a cool finish past Barcherini in the Carlton goal. Warrington extended their lead even further when striker Karl Rendell saw his effort deflect past Barcherini into the net. Deep into injury time The Wire made it six when Karl Brown followed substitute Phil Mitchell’s effort for an easy finish. Town will be looking to build on this impressive display when they play Prescott Cables in the Liverpool Senior Cup on Tuesday night at Cantilever Park. | ||||||
