TOWN manager Ian Street was proud of his side after their battling display in the Liverpool Senior Cup quarter final against Liverpool on Tuesday.

The Reds put out a reserve side including Lee Peltier, Miki Roque and Danny Guthrie, who all played in the Champions League visit to Galatasaray in December, with the latter banishing the disappointment of his involvement in last week's 6-3 Carling Cup defeat to Arsenal with a superb winning goal.

But Town, who host Wakefield FC on Saturday, kept plugging away and had their chances, even equalising in the 22nd minute when Danny Salt's cross was looped over his own goalkeeper by Spanish centre back Roque.

Street said: "I always know what I'm getting from my team, they always give me 100 per cent.

"We weren't at full strength and I'm sure we'd have given a better account of ourselves with regards to putting a bit of pressure on their goal if we'd had the team we'll put out on Saturday.

"Hopefully, 100 of the people who came on Tuesday will come to our game on Saturday.

"If we can hang on to a better crowd we can progress as a club and as a town. That's my aim."

Liverpool Academy director Steve Heighway and the injured Paul Barratt - the Warringtonian who was part of the Reds' FA Youth Cup triumph last year - were in attendance on a special night for Town.

The game had to be delayed by 15 minutes to allow all of the 1,347 crowd - a large number of whom supported the home side - to get through the turnstiles.

Moroccan Nabil El Zhar caused Town early problems but the Yellows back four defended valiantly throughout, although Town went behind when Salt's misplaced pass allowed Austrian Besian Idrizaj to slot the ball past in-form keeper Richie Mottram in the 18th minute.

The Mitchell brothers, Phil and Graeme, then had shots saved in quick succession before the equaliser came.

Imposing midfielder Danny Guthrie strode forward and fired home the winner from 25 yards in the 56th minute. Town tired in the closing stages but Guthrie was denied by the post.
