Subs not used: Dubem Eze, George Goudie. Warrington Town secured a top half finish in their debut season in National League North with a goalless draw at Rushall Olympic. Isaac Buckley-Ricketts hit the inside of the post in the second half for the best chance of either side, as he finished the season as the club’s top goalscorer. Josh Amis was denied by ‘keeper Jacob Weaver from a corner, while at the other end Dan Atherton made a couple of saves before the break to keep the hosts out. It was a game typical of the final game of the season for two clubs with not much to play for, but the Yellows almost started in positive fashion when inside the first minute, Amis beat his man and was denied from a tight angle by Weaver. After that early chance though, it was Rushall who had the better of the first period, forcing no fewer than 10 corners as they made the most of a swirling wind. Atherton saved well one-handed to deny Sam McLintock, and he also got down well to intercept a low cross from lively Wolves loanee Owen Farmer. The Yellows, playing a different system to usual utilising Kacper Pasiek and Matty McDonald as wing-backs, grew more in to the game after half time and started to create chances of their own. McDonald won the ball back in midfield and should have done better in passing to Amis on a three-on-two, shortly before Buckley-Ricketts lofted a wind-assisted Atherton goal kick over the bar. Amis almost broke the deadlock with what appeared to be his face, when he arrived late for a Williams corner unsighted, only to be denied by Weaver scrambling across to his right. On the hour mark, there were appeals for a penalty after a clever flick by Williams released Pasiek, and his cross was diverted behind for a corner with what Amis appealed to be a hand. The clearest chance fell to Buckley-Ricketts 17 minutes from time, cutting in from the left and firing a fierce strike towards the top corner that came back off the inside of the post. There was a chance for Andre Wisdom, denied by the quick thinking Weaver as he overlapped Connor Woods, before youngster Adam Brooks was handed his league debut late on. Defeat for Scarborough against Alfreton means Warrington Town finish 12th in the table, the highest they’ve finished in the football pyramid in the club’s history. | ||||||
