WHITBY Town eased any worries of being drawn into the relegation battle with a 2-0 win at Warrington Town. The damage was done in the first half, goals from Harley Dawson and Layton Watts securing only Whitby’s second win in 12 games. The Yellows hit the woodwork through Elliott Morris’ acrobatic overhead kick and Jordan Scanlon should have done better with an attempted lob of Shane Bland after Evan Gumbs’ ball dropped in behind. But barely minutes later, Whitby opened the scoring on 19 minutes. Jake Charles worked hard on the left all game and his pull back broke in the box for Watts and his shot sat up for Dawson to tap in at the far post. Watts could have doubled the lead on 25 minutes, beating the offside trap but took an early lobbed chance that dropped well wide. Liam Isherwood was then out quick to deny Charles, while at the other end a last ditch tackle by Alex Nelson halted Morris six yards out. The second goal came four minutes before half time, a loose Morris pass finding Charles on half way and he released Watts through on goal, and with acres of space and plenty of time, he made no mistake picking his spot beyond Isherwood. Isherwood saved with his legs to deny Charles at the end of the half, and the second half was uneventful until a triple change fired Warrington in to life. Kallan Murphy did find the back of the net on 65 minutes, only for the referee to penalise Max Thompson for a high foot, and with that went any hopes of a Warrington comeback. Warrington Town: Isherwood, Melhado, J Doyle (Bourne 62), Gumbs, Butler, Vela, Scanlon (Harris 62), Tweedley (Thompson 62), Murphy, Daly Morris. Unused sub: Roper. | ||||||
