WARRINGTON Town pulled off another cup upset winning 1-0 at Unibond Premier outfit Matlock Town in the FA Trophy 1st qualifying round.
The Wire travelled in confidence after disposing of Chorley in the previous round and previously taking the Scalp of Cammell Laird in the Liverpool Senior Cup.
Both sides started cautiously with the first chance of the game falling to Matlock captain Simon Barraclough whose shot hit the post. The Wire began to boss the game and soon began to create problems for their hosts, with Phil
Hadland only being denied by an on-rushing Andy Richmond clearance.
The Wire should have taken the lead in the 20th minute when Kevin Towey got on the end of a long clearance to lob Richmond, unfortunately, the ball fell agonisingly wide of the target.
Now Town were on top and were really causing problems for the defence, and it was Towey who once again should have opened the scoring when he rounded Richmond, only to see his shot go agonisingly wide of the far post.
The final chance of the half fell to the home side, when dangerous striker Ross Hannah was allowed to run through on goal, only to see his shot go narrowly wide of the target under pressure from Andy Thomas and Ritchie Mottram.
The second half started with Town in control, winger Scott Williams was soon to go close when his angled drive went across the face of the goal, however the home side were not out of the game and forced Mottram into making a couple of saves.
Midfielder Franny Smith went close soon after when his long range effort went narrowly over the bar and midfielder Anthony Daniels saw his drive rebound out off the post with Richmond well beaten.
Town began to push forward looking for a goal that would surely be the winner, Daniels going close soon after.
The breakthrough came in the 74th minute when substitute Carl Rendell turned and fired home an angled drive from the edge of the 18 yard box.Within a minute the home side should have been level when midfielder Gary Webster blasted over after a good save by Mottram.
The rest of the game saw the home side attacking, but The Wire held firm to book their place in the next round.
Now the team needs to pick up much needed league points, starting tomorrow away at high flying Clitheroe followed by a home game with Ossett Albion at Cantilever Park this Saturday (Oct 25) kick off 3pm.
